Technical overview

Kisspeptins are cut from a 145-amino-acid precursor made by the KISS1 gene. Kisspeptin-10 is its last ten amino acids (Tyr-Asn-Trp-Asn-Ser-Phe-Gly-Leu-Arg-Phe-NH2), the shortest piece that fully activates the kisspeptin receptor, KISS1R (also called GPR54). KISS1 was first described in 1996 as a gene that suppresses cancer metastasis, which is where the name metastin comes from.

Research applications

Research uses kisspeptin-10 to study how the brain starts the reproductive hormone cascade: GnRH release in the hypothalamus, then LH and FSH from the pituitary, then testosterone and estrogen. It is also studied in puberty timing, fertility and metastasis models.
