PT-141 Overview

A cyclic melanocortin peptide studied for how the brain drives sexual desire and arousal.

Technical overview

PT-141 is a seven-amino-acid cyclic peptide, Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-OH, developed by Palatin Technologies from Melanotan 2. It differs from Melanotan 2 only at its C-terminus, a free acid in place of an amide, and acts mainly on the MC3 and MC4 melanocortin receptors in the brain.

Research applications

PT-141 is studied in research on central melanocortin signalling, especially MC4R pathways in the hypothalamus linked to sexual desire and arousal. It was approved by the FDA in 2019 as bremelanotide (Vyleesi).

FAQs

  • What is PT-141?

PT-141 is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide, Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-OH, that activates melanocortin receptors in the brain, mainly MC3R and MC4R.

  • Is PT-141 the same as bremelanotide?

Yes. Bremelanotide is the generic name for PT-141. It was approved by the FDA in 2019 under the brand name Vyleesi.

  • What is PT-141 studied for?

PT-141 is studied in research on central melanocortin signalling, especially MC4R pathways in the hypothalamus linked to sexual desire and arousal.

  • What is the difference between PT-141 and Melanotan 2?

PT-141 was developed from Melanotan 2 and differs only at its C-terminus. Melanotan 2 also acts strongly on MC1R, the pigmentation receptor, so it is studied for tanning. PT-141 is studied for sexual-function pathways.

  • How should PT-141 be stored?

Keep the sealed vial in the refrigerator at 36–46°F (2–8°C), dry and away from light. As a freeze-dried powder it tolerates room temperature for weeks, which is why it ships without ice. Once reconstituted, keep it refrigerated between uses. More in our guide, Do peptides need to be refrigerated?

  • How much PT-141 is in a vial?

PT-141 comes as a white lyophilized powder in a 10mg vial.

  • Is PT-141 for human use?

No. PT-141 is sold for laboratory research use only.
