Sermorelin vs Ipamorelin: Differences, Half-Life and Stacking
Sermorelin vs ipamorelin compared: the two receptors, half-life, side effects, taking them together, how sermorelin compares with CJC-1295 and the CJC-1295/ipamorelin blend, dosing, cost and which one to start with.
Sermorelin and ipamorelin are the classic growth hormone pair. Clinics prescribe them together, research protocols draw them at the same bedtime slot, and most people comparing the two are deciding whether they need one, the other or both. Each makes the pituitary release its own growth hormone, but they reach it through two different signals.
Simms Research sells both, Sermorelin at $78 and Ipamorelin at $74, each as 10mg of powder, along with the ready-mixed CJC-1295 noDAC / Ipamorelin blend for $78. The choice comes down to which signal each one copies, how long it lasts and whether the research wants one receptor working or two.
What are sermorelin and ipamorelin?
Sermorelin is GHRH(1-29): growth-hormone-releasing hormone cut down to its opening 29 amino acids, the part of the hormone that does the work. GHRH is the brain’s instruction to the pituitary to make and release growth hormone. Under the name Geref, sermorelin held two US approvals, a 1990 pituitary test and a 1997 treatment for growth-hormone-deficient children, until EMD Serono discontinued it in 2008. An FDA notice in 2013 ruled that it had not left the market over safety or effectiveness.
Ipamorelin is five amino acids, built at Novo Nordisk and published in 1998 as the first ghrelin-type peptide to release growth hormone and nothing else. It mimics ghrelin, the appetite hormone the stomach puts out, at the pituitary’s ghrelin receptor, GHS-R1a. It is older than the hormone it copies: Japanese researchers didn’t find ghrelin itself until 1999, so ipamorelin was designed for a receptor whose natural partner was still unknown. It has never been an approved drug.
What is the difference between sermorelin and ipamorelin?
The receptor each one works on. The pituitary cells that make growth hormone answer to three signals: GHRH says release, somatostatin says hold, and ghrelin, through a receptor of its own, sets off a release and eases somatostatin’s hold. Sermorelin is the first signal and ipamorelin the third.
That is why they are a pair rather than rivals. A GHRH-type peptide alone runs into somatostatin; a ghrelin-type peptide works best with GHRH already present. In a 1990 Tulane study of 18 healthy men, a ghrelin-type peptide given with GHRH at low doses released growth hormone synergistically, more than the sum of the two given separately. Ipamorelin is from that family, built later to be cleaner.

Sermorelin vs ipamorelin half-life
About 11 minutes for sermorelin and about 2 hours for ipamorelin. Neither figure is how long the growth hormone lasts, because each injection sets off a single pulse that runs its own course.
Sermorelin is cleared within minutes, yet in a 16-week study of adults aged 55 to 71 injecting a one-amino-acid variant at 9pm, growth hormone climbed inside 10 minutes of the injection and held for roughly two hours. Ipamorelin lingers longer, and given to healthy men at five dose levels it produced one release of growth hormone at every dose, topping out around the 40-minute mark before falling back to baseline.
So the two land in the same window. Both give one pulse per injection, and both are timed for a fasted bedtime, where they add to the body’s largest natural pulse soon after sleep. Neither keeps growth hormone up through the night, which is why protocols that want more of it add an injection rather than enlarge one.
Does ipamorelin work better than sermorelin?
Nobody has compared the two directly in people, and their human records differ in kind. Sermorelin’s is the deeper one. As Geref it went through the trials of an approved drug, in which growth-hormone-deficient children nearly doubled their growth rate on a nightly injection. In healthy men averaging 68, 1mg morning and evening for 14 days lifted growth hormone and IGF-1 to the levels of men in their twenties. Over 16 weeks of nightly injections in older adults, IGF-1 rose within two weeks and skin thickened in both sexes, while the men also gained lean mass and libido and responded better to insulin.
Ipamorelin’s human record is the dose study above and one trial that measured something else: a 2014 trial of 117 patients recovering from bowel surgery, where ipamorelin was tested for restarting the gut and didn’t beat placebo. Its bone and growth work is in rats. What it does have is the cleanest hormone profile in its family, and that is the real case for it.
Sermorelin vs ipamorelin side effects
Both are quiet at research doses, and most of what turns up is local. Across Geref’s trials, roughly one patient in six had soreness, swelling or redness where the dose went in, and nothing else on its label reached one in a hundred. GHRH can also bring a brief warm flush to the face: 16 of the 18 men given it by vein in the 1990 study had one, lasting one to three minutes.
Ipamorelin’s strength is what it leaves alone. The older ghrelin-type peptides raised more than growth hormone; at its top dose in that 1990 study, GHRP-6 doubled prolactin and cortisol. In Novo Nordisk’s 1998 tests in swine, both GHRP-6 and GHRP-2 raised ACTH and cortisol, while ipamorelin kept them where GHRH itself does, even at more than 200 times its growth hormone dose. Prolactin, LH, FSH and TSH didn’t move. In the surgical trial, side effects of any kind were slightly less common on ipamorelin than on placebo, 87.5% against 94.8%.
The downsides of ipamorelin are mostly what it isn’t. It works on the hunger receptor, so some researchers find a dose brings on mild hunger for an hour or so. Each injection gives one short pulse, so more growth hormone means more injections. And it has never been through the approval trials sermorelin has.
Can ipamorelin and sermorelin be taken together?
Yes, and it is the most common way to run either: one peptide of each type in the same window, the pairing the synergy work points to.
Protocols draw both at bedtime, at least two hours after the last food, each from its own vial: sermorelin at 200 to 300mcg (4 to 6 units with 2mL in its vial) and ipamorelin at 100 to 200mcg (3 to 6 units with 3mL in its vial). Each keeps the dose it has alone. Full unit charts and schedules are in each peptide’s own guide, sermorelin’s and ipamorelin’s.
Two GHRH-type peptides don’t make the same pair. Sermorelin with CJC-1295 or tesamorelin doubles up on one receptor; tesamorelin’s own pairing with ipamorelin is set out in Tesamorelin vs Ipamorelin.

Sermorelin vs CJC-1295
CJC-1295 is sermorelin’s modified successor: the same first 29 amino acids of GHRH with four of them swapped so enzymes break it down more slowly. Without DAC, the form in nearly every blend, its half-life stretches from sermorelin’s 11 minutes to about 30, a longer push on the same receptor from each injection. With DAC, an added group binds albumin in the blood and stretches it to about a week; in its human trial a single shot lifted average growth hormone between two and tenfold, for six days or longer. The CJC-1295 guide covers DAC against no DAC.
Same receptor, same job; the difference is staying power. That also answers which peptide is stronger than sermorelin. In the GHRH family there are two: CJC-1295, which lasts longer, and tesamorelin, the full 44-amino-acid hormone with a cap that blocks DPP-4, the enzyme that switches GHRH off, and the largest trials of the three, compared in Sermorelin vs Tesamorelin. Sermorelin keeps the approval history CJC-1295 never had and the adult studies above.
Sermorelin vs CJC-1295/ipamorelin
The blend is the sermorelin-and-ipamorelin idea rebuilt with the longer-lasting GHRH half. CJC-1295 without DAC takes sermorelin’s place, ipamorelin stays, and both share one vial: Simms Research’s CJC-1295 noDAC / Ipamorelin holds 5mg of each for $78. Mixed with 2.5mL, 5 units carries 100mcg of each, and protocols run it up to three times a day.
Against sermorelin alone, the blend works both receptors, so each injection gets the synergy. Against sermorelin plus ipamorelin from two vials, it trades adjustable doses for one draw at a fixed one-to-one ratio. For muscle-focused protocols the blend is the usual pick, run two or three times a day with one draw after training; sermorelin’s muscle data are small gains in men past 55. CJC-1295 vs Ipamorelin covers what the blend’s two halves do on their own, and the blend’s own dosing guide has its units and schedules.
Sermorelin vs ipamorelin dosage and cost
Both are dosed in micrograms. Unit counts assume a U-100 insulin syringe, with the blend alongside:
| Sermorelin | Ipamorelin | CJC-1295/ipamorelin blend | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water per 10mg vial | 2mL | 3mL | 2.5mL (5mg of each peptide) |
| Usual draw | 4–6 units (200–300mcg) | 3–6 units (100–200mcg) | 5 units (100mcg of each) |
| How often | Once a night | 1–3 times a day | 1–3 times a day |
| Draws per vial | 33 of 300mcg | 50 of 200mcg | 50 of 100mcg each |
| Price per vial | $78 | $74 | $78 |
| 30 days at one draw a night | $84 | $79 | $84 |
Once mixed, a vial is good for 28 days refrigerated, so at one draw a night the calendar retires each vial with draws to spare, and the two together run $163 per 30 days. At two draws a day the dose empties the vial first, in 25 days: $89 per 30 days for ipamorelin at 200mcg, $94 for the blend.
For a different vial size, water volume or dose, the peptide calculator does the conversion, and how to reconstitute peptides walks through the mixing. Simms Research’s Research Water is $20 for 10mL, enough for five sermorelin vials at 2mL or three ipamorelin vials at 3mL; the peptide storage guide explains how long powder and mixed vials hold.
Which is better, sermorelin or ipamorelin?
For a single peptide, ipamorelin is the better place to start. For the strongest result, the pair beats either one.
Choose ipamorelin to run one peptide on the least money: $74 a vial, one bedtime draw, nothing raised but growth hormone, and the option of two or three injections a day. It is also the half every pairing keeps, so a GHRH partner can be added later without changing its dose.
Choose sermorelin when the research follows its human record: IGF-1, lean mass and skin over months of nightly injections in older adults, the outcomes its studies measured. It has the approval history, and one nightly draw is the whole protocol.
Choose both for the largest pulse per injection. Sermorelin with ipamorelin keeps each dose adjustable in two vials. The CJC-1295/ipamorelin blend gives the same two-receptor pulse from one vial, with a longer-lasting GHRH half, at sermorelin’s price.

Sermorelin and ipamorelin lab results
Both current batches held slightly more than 10mg per vial, both above 99.6% pure. An independent ISO-certified lab tested three vials of each in July 2026: sermorelin averaged 10.64mg at 99.64% purity, while ipamorelin came in at 10.32mg and 99.77%. LC-MS confirmed each molecule, and the endotoxin, heavy-metal and sterility screens all came back clean. The blend’s posted batch, from May 2026, read 99.93% purity, with 5.28mg of ipamorelin beside 5.33mg of CJC-1295, its two halves within 1% of each other.
The full certificates sit on the sermorelin, ipamorelin and blend lab pages and in the lab results library, and the guide to reading a COA decodes each figure on them.
Frequently asked questions
Is sermorelin or ipamorelin better for men?
The doses are the same for men and women. Sermorelin has the male-specific data: in the 16-week study, the men gained lean mass and libido and responded better to insulin, and the women didn’t.
Can I take sermorelin with CJC-1295?
It can be done, but both work on the GHRH receptor, so the pair gets none of the two-receptor synergy. Protocols pair one of them with ipamorelin instead.
Are sermorelin and ipamorelin approved?
Sermorelin was, as Geref, until 2008. Ipamorelin never has been. Simms Research supplies both as laboratory research materials only.
